Foundations of Spatial Audio
Isa Ferri (Head of Sound, IKLECTIK)
6 pm

If you’re new to 3D sound, this specially designed programme is a wonderful opportunity to discover the basics of creating and producing immersive audio. It also offers a friendly introduction to working with multichannel sound systems.
This introductory session by Isa Barzizza (Head of Sound at IKLECTIK) and Simon East (Thunkist and Flowfal) explores the history and evolution of spatial sound through a talk and live demonstration. Covering Ambisonics, loudspeaker environments, gestural motion control for spatial audio and visual systems, immersive and interactive performance, and contemporary listening practices, the session offers an accessible introduction to immersive sound.
About IKLECTIK
Founded in London in 2014, IKLECTIK has built an international reputation for presenting work that sits between music, performance, technology and research. We support artists working at the edges of form — where sound becomes spatial, performance fills the space, and audiences are invited into new ways of listening.
IKLECTIK is one of the few grassroots organisations in the UK developing work with multi-channel and three-dimensional audio systems, enabling artists to compose in space, not just in stereo.
Move sound through and around audiences.
Explore listening as a physical and emotional experience.
For us, sound is not background. It is architecture. It is the environment. It is something you step inside.
About Simon East
Simon East has been producing interactive audio-visual installations for over 12 years. His practice focuses on creating fully interactive, immersive pieces that allow participants to take full control of an installation. A key point for him is creating spaces where participants can clearly hear and/or see the effect they are having, as well as the ability to improvise with other participants to create an output unique to that moment.
Under the name Thunkist he has worked with choreographers to produce movement-activated audio for contemporary dance pieces as well as making live music performances, often where the audience is able to control some of the music being played.
As a creative technologist, he has developed a system called Flowfal that takes movement from musicians, dancers, or audience members to trigger sound and visual effects. He is now expanding this to include visual motion-detection systems that require participants to move within a space.
Venus / Zohreh by Shiva Feshareki (British-Iranian experimental composer)
Spatial sound live performance
8 pm
Venus / Zohreh (2018) is a living work that has continuously transformed across multiple forms: from string quartet to solo electric guitar, string orchestra and spatial electronic versions, while retaining a constant core foundation. Originally developed by Shiva Feshareki in collaboration with geologist Dr Philip Mason — a key researcher on Venus and planetary expeditions — the work draws on both scientific inquiry and spiritual energy. Inspired by Feshareki’s mother, Zohreh, whose name means “Venus” in Persian, the piece unfolds as a process of exponential intensification in speed, density and volume, with sound emerging as evolving matter.
For this performance — the first time Feshareki has performed the work herself — Venus / Zohreh appears in a new form for bowed bass guitar, 3D electronics and speaker dome. Presented for the first time since her mother’s passing in April, this rendition is dedicated to the honour, memory and aura of Feshareki’s beautiful mother, Zohreh.
