The open call
In partnership with Artist-in-Residence Taipei and East Street Arts, we welcome applications from artists based in the UK for a six-week residency in Treasure Hill Artist Village, Taipei, between August and September 2024.
We will support one artist to visit Taipei to research and develop new projects. We are looking for artists who work with audio-visual media and have a strong interest in collaborating with communities, local residents, and other artists to experiment, enhance your skills, and expand your network.
About the organisations
East Street Arts believes that artists will affect positive change and it is our mission to support them; providing affordable space for artists to practise; delivering bespoke artist development and sector research; curating a public programme of engagement; and hosting in the UK’s first Art Hostel, designed entirely by artists.
Artist-in-Residence Taipei (AIR Taipei) connects residency sites and artists worldwide. By providing an exchange platform for artists, AIR Taipei facilitates a transnational cultural network that encourages collaboration across diverse disciplines and communities, and the development of new perspectives. AIR Taipei has hosted over 600 international and domestic artists and supported 200 Taiwanese artists in their residency projects abroad. Treasure Hill Artist Village is managed by the Department of AIR, Taipei Culture Foundation. It is the first publicly funded residency institution in Taiwan.
Residency length
6 weeks
Residency period
Between August and September 2024. An extension is negotiable, with the artist covering their expenses.
Residency Activities
- Opportunity to meet and engage with artists, curators, local communities, and other art practitioners through site visits, events, and casual gatherings.
- Producer support for developing and presenting new works.
- Curatorial and technical support and advice.
- Mentoring or facilitation of your process.
- Connections with new collaborators.
- Opportunities to get involved in other projects of East Street Arts and Platform Asia.
- Space and equipment for organising public events for developing and presenting your work, with our marketing support.
Expected outputs from successful applicants
- Public sharing event
- Reflective blog post and/or podcast recording
- Studio visits across Treasure Hill studios and local artists
- A work-in-progress exhibition and artist talk taking place at Treasure Hill Artist Village. This could be a temporary exhibition, performance, screening, or other activity related to their research and practice.
What we are offering through this opportunity
- £2,000 stipend, plus £600 towards food and travel (fee is inclusive of all taxes)
- A material budget of £1,000
- A return economy-class flight between the UK and Taiwan
- A private bedroom (room type subject to availability) at Treasure Hill Artist Village in central Taipei, with shared facilities, including: a laundry room, kitchen, internet connection, woodworking studio, gallery spaces, dance studios, outdoor spaces and multi-purpose meeting rooms
Application Eligibility
- Be based in England (i.e. have an address in the country).
- Have demonstrable 3-5 years of experience as an active contemporary artist.
- Use sound and audio-visual media as the core of their practice. This includes, but is not limited to, noise music, experimental sound, audiovisual installation and moving image.
- Have a strong interest in collaborating with communities and other artists to develop artworks.
- Demonstrate how the residency will benefit both artistic development and local networks.
Timeline
8th April: Applications open
5th May: Applications close
10th May: Artists informed of short-listing outcome
16th May: Informal conversations with shortlisted artists
31st May: Successful artist selected and informed of outcome
3 Jun – 2 Aug: Briefing sessions
5 Aug – 16 Sept (TBC): UK artists take part in residency at Treasure Hill Artist Village, residency dates to be discussed with selected artist & subject to travel arrangement
